The class will first focus on monotype printmaking using Akua inks and water soluble crayons. Participants need not have previous experience. If you can push paint around with a brush then you can make unique one of a kind prints.
Midway through the session a safer technique to make etchings will be introduced.
These can be printed on their own or combined with monotype.
We will initially work with a 7×9 inch format so bring color sketches that size to the first class. The instructor, a master printer, will guide each artist through the plate preparation process and the printing. All printmaking materials used are non-toxic with dishwashing detergent used for clean up at the end of class.
This monotype course is an excellent opportunity for any recent high school graduates who are headed to art school in the fall.
SUPPLIES: Instructor will provide all materials for a modest materials fee.
Anthony Kirk: For more than four decades Anthony Kirk has been involved in fine art intaglio and relief printmaking first as a student at Winchester and Chelsea Schools of Art in the United Kingdom, then as a lecturer, instructor and Master Printer in the US. From 1987 to 2000 Kirk was head of the etching department at Tyler Graphics where he collaborated with Frank Stella, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell and John Walker among others in the printing of their editions.
In his career as a Master Printer Kirk has witnessed the introduction of methods and materials which are non- toxic and make unnecessary the traditional solvents associated with printmaking. He has taught these innovative techniques at Boston University, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, the Hotchkiss School, Fine Art Work Center, Provincetown, Woodstock School of Art and Manhattan Graphics Center. Kirk has exhibited his own prints widely including Footprint International, The Royal Scottish Academy, and the 3rd International Print Biennale, Newcastle, England.
