This class will teach you how to create stronger, more compelling compositions and to
intentionally communicate through your artwork. We will discuss how to visually organize
the elements of Art and Principles of Design to create engaging artwork. This will be done
through discussion, experimentation, exhausting the creative process, observational
research recorded in the student’s sketchbook, studio work and finally through formal
group critiques.
This is an excellent foundational course for any artist novice to advanced practicing in any
discipline. Come prepared to experiment, learn and have fun, this class is only made better
with a willingness to be creative.

Sketchbook, at least 8.5”x 6.5”
Mechanical pencil .9mm
fine tip markers
Bristol Board- pad- 8 1/2 x 11 or larger
Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser
Scissors
X-acto Knife (with replacement blades)
Rubber Cutting Mat 9”x12” (or equiv.)
Metal Ruler (minimum 12”)
Small plastic watercolor palette
Acrylic Paint Set (I recommend Liquitex or Golden at least 12 color sets to start with)
Acrylic matt medium or Modge Podge (8.5 oz. or equiv.)
Brushes-assorted Soft craft brushes for acrylic
Old yogurt container or other medium to large sized container for water
Paper towels
Later individual projects may require other purchases
Jodi Steifel is an artist, educator and mother. She holds a BFA from Paier College of Art and
MFA from The New York Academy of Art. Jodi works out of her studio in the woods in her
Newtown home creating large paintings in which she communicates her memory, emotion and
mental health. Jodi has taught Art History, Painting and currently teaches Two- dimensional
design.
